Good morning! I have another super easy recipe to share with you all that I think you’re going to love! An easy, homemade tomato sauce with only fresh ingredients that comes together in just 20 minutes. And the best part is, the stove does most of the work.
To start, you mix the onion and garlic with some seasoning. Then you add the canned crushed tomatoes with water, let it simmer for a little bit and it’s ready! No cooking fresh tomatoes and peeling them. No hours at the stove. Just an easy, simple homemade sauce.
Here’s my biggest suggestion when making it – taste the brand of tomatoes you buy first. If they’re naturally sweet, don’t add that much sugar (or any at all). Sauce really doesn’t need that much sugar to taste delicious. That’s really it! Just enjoy making and eating it! My favorite dish to serve it with is my turkey meatballs, but this tomato sauce works with any kind of dish you’d normally use jarred sauce for.
If you like it, let me know in the comments below! Happy cooking and enjoy your week! 🙂
20-Minute Easy Homemade Tomato Sauce
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 medium yellow onion, finely diced
- 4 large cloves garlic, minced
- 2 teaspoons dried basil
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
- 1/8 – 1/4 teaspoon granulated sugar (depending on how sweet tomatoes are)
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1-28 ounce can crushed tomatoes
- 1/4 cup water
Directions
- Heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Saute the onions until they soften, about 2-3 minutes. Add the garlic and stir to combine. Then, add the basil, salt, pepper and sugar and stir. Add the butter and cook for 1-2 minutes.
- Add 1/2 can of the crushed tomatoes. Scrape the bottom of the pan to remove any stuck on bits. Reduce heat to low and add remaining crushed tomatoes. Stir in water and let simmer for 10-15 minutes.

- Once ready, remove from heat and serve immediately or let cool to room temperature before storing in fridge.
